Obverse description
Above, we can see a representation of the NRP Espadarte, the Portuguese Navy`s first submarine, acquired in 1913. This submarine was built at the Laubeuf shipyards in France and represented a huge innovation at the time, giving the navy submerged warfare capabilities. Below, a modern submarine, probably of the Albacora class, showing the technological evolution over 75 years.
We see the coats of arms of three Albacora Class submarines: NRP Albacora, NRP Delfim and NRP Barracuda. In 1964, the Portuguese government ordered the construction of four submarines of this class from Dubigeòn Shipyards, wich became the 4th submarine squadron of the Portuguese Navy and have been in operation since 1967.
